Haafner conversing with the jamadar of Alamparai

This print depicts Haafner's conversation with the jamadar (captain) of Alamparai. After Haafner and his companions fled Madras, they sailed south towards Pondicherry. En route, however, they were constantly mistaken for English and pursued and attacked by the inhabitants of the area, who adhered to Hyder Ali and were therefore at war with the English. When their ship was overtaken and boarded, Haafner posed as an ambassador on his way to the French in Pondicherry. This spared the ship's crew for now and Haafner himself was brought before the jamadar (captain) of Alamparai. He eventually managed to convince this one that he was a Dutchman, and, moreover, on a previous occasion had helped an important commander of Hyder Ali escape death against the British. At this, Haafner was treated with all due respect and his little ship was eventually allowed to leave unhindered.
