Map of North and South America
Visscher II, Nicolaas / Visscher I, Nicolaas
Map of North and South America. -Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Americae.
This map by Nicolaas Visscher II (1649-1702) is an amended reprint of a chart that was published in 1658 by his father Nicolaas Visscher I. The map exerted a great influence on the maps of America that were published later in the 17th and 18th centures. The East Coast of North America in particular has been charted fairly accurately. This does not apply to the American West Coast however, where California is shown as an island.
The chart features several small illustrations, such as in South America a war and a figure in a hammock.
At bottom left a partial sketch of New Zealand.
Top left a dedication to Cornelius Witsen, with a coat of arms and helmet, carried by four angels. -Cf. Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague, inv. nr. 185 B 14 part I, before p. 1 and Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, inv. nr. NG-501-89.
