Chart of Le Maire Strait
Maire, Jacob le
Title Leupe: Kaartje van Zuid-Amerika, de Straat van Magellaan, Straat Le Maire, de Westkust van Zuid-Amerika tot aan Baldivia.
P.A. Leupe mentions in his inventory from 1867 that this chart was made during the travels of Jacob Le Maire and Willem Cornelisz Schouten in 1615-1616. Since Le Maire likely drew, or at least edited, the maps of new discoveries on this expedition himself, he plausibly produced this map too. The chart is shows the southernmost part of South America. The new passage south of the continent, here called the ‘pasaeden lae meer’, directs past Tierra del Fuego (‘Vuurland’) and the Isla de los Estados (‘Staeten landt’) to ‘the new south sea’. Cabo de Hornos (‘Kaap Hoorn’), which is located on the most peripheral island south of Tierra del Fuego, has now been drawn yet. The name for the Isla Wollaston given here is Barnevelts Eiland, which is in honour of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt. To the east (to the left on the map) the ‘sijebelt dije weerts’ islands can be found. These are the northern Falkland islands which were discovered by skipper Sebald de Weert in 1598. De Weert sailed with the fleet of Jacques Mahu and Simon de Cordes, but was forced to return to Rotterdam at the Magellan Strait, where he arrived in 1600. On the Argentinian coast the ‘porte dijesijere’ (Port Desire) islands are noted.
