The map shows the coastal features of South America south of the Equator. An insert map at the centre shows Dutch Brazil which around 1656 had just been lost. The chart uses rhumb lines for direction and colours to indicate coasts belonging to different regions. This map was part of Arnold Colom’s Zee Atlas which was published between 1654 and 1658, and gained renown for its scope, refinement and size.
North is up.
