Mulgirigala

Sri Lanka

The Mulgirigala temple is a rock temple with a reclining Buddha, situated under a strikingly shaped rock. The VOC governor of Ceylon commissioned the Dutch artist Arent Jansen to draw the area c. 1635. The results are handed down to us in the form of several engravings by Johann Wolfgang Heydt, who worked after Jansen's now-lost drawings.

The rock was called Adamsberg (Adam's mountain) at the time. This should not be confused with the present-day Adam's Peak, which is located further to the north.
