Map of the military post and the mine on the Parnassusberg

Anoniem / Anonymous

Titel Leupe: Schetsteekening van de post op de Parnassersberg.

In 1713, a military post was established at what was known as the Parnassusberg (Mount Parnassus), near the later plantation Berg en Dal, a steep hill directly on the Surinam river. Five years later, 'mining works' under the direction of the self-proclaimed mining expert Salomon Sanders commenced here as well. Both Sanders’ house (C) and the entrances to the mine (D) are indicated in the legend on this anonymous 1719 situation map of the hill and its immediate environs. Until Sanders’ prosecution in 1723, the government sponsored gold-mining here, without the slightest result. Later attempts in 1729 and 1741, a little further upstream, also proved largely fruitless.

North is right.
