Plan of the fortress at the Demerara River

Anoniem / Anonymous

Title Leupe: Figuratief plan van het fort te Demerary enz.

This map dates from the brief 1803-1804 period following the Treaty of Amiens when Demerara, together with the neighbouring colonies on the Wild Coast, had once again fallen under the rule of the Netherlands, then a de facto tributary of France. The ground plan was sent back from Demerara in 1804, shortly before the third and definitive period of British occupation.

It concerned a project for the reinforcement of Fort Willem Frederik then currently underway, which necessitated further amendments to the ground plan.

The fort in its new form is also to be seen on the large map of the capital town of Demerara drawn Lieutenant Jan Hoffman on VEL1664.

Note the faulty orientation; the arrow indicating north should be pointing in the opposite direction.

Scale-bar of 48 Rods = 92 ‘strepen’ [approximately 1 : 1,970].
