Coastline profile of Saint Helena

On its return voyage from Bantam to the Dutch Republic, in mid-May 1600 the Amsterdam passed the island of St. Helena in the southern Atlantic Ocean, which is located just under 2000 kilometers west of the African coast. The island was in Portuguese hands, who used the island as a stopover place for their ships. The helmsman of the Amsterdam, Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck of the Amsterdam drew this coastline profile of the island as seen at about 10 miles distance when located northwest of the observer.
