Paardeberg lay north-east of the Cape of Good Hope, just on the other side of the Zoute River. Pieter van Dam, who recorded the history of the VOC around 1701, notes that in the year 1693 Paardeburg was manned by three Company employees tending a herd of 262 cattle.
