Hottentots-Holland lay to the east of False Bay, a 15-hour journey from the Cape. There were two kraals, or villages, in Hottentots-Holland, numbering 500 to 600 men each. Pieter van Dam, who recorded the history of the VOC around 1701, notes that in the year 1693 the Company employed nine people there as well as 11 slave boys, 10 slave girls and an unspecified number of children.
