Arippu

There were rich pearl beds at Arippu, once known as Aripo. The pearl trade was one of the VOC's most profitable activities. The organisation of the pearl trade was in the hands of the Company. VOC officials had Ceylonese dive for pearls from small boats while they monitored the situation from on board larger vessels to ensure that no pearls were stolen.
