The map was originally featured in Joan Blaeu's 'Atlas Maior'.
After 1640 Madagascar was a port of call for the French in particular. Blaeu had this chart made especially for the 'Atlas Maior' and based it on information from a book by the French governor, Etienne de Flacourt.
