Mullipattu

In the centre of Mullipattu stood a church and a school where the local inhabitants were given religious instruction. These schools not only had an important role to play in the propagation of the Protestant faith, but also functioned as centres for a detailed registration of the local population. The records kept by teachers of their pupils gave the VOC an insight into the people under its authority. Because the area verged on the border with the territory ruled by the king of Ceylon, the Company also built a small fort at Mullipattu. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
