Cornelis de Houtman's expedition encounters the indigenous people of the Cape of Good Hope. -This plate is taken from a French edition of the 'Itinerario' by Jan Huygen van Linschoten. The illustration itself is however a copy of a plate contained in 'Indiae Orientalis', part II, by the brothers De Bry of Frankfurt.

According to P.A. Tiele's 'Memoire bibliographique', this edition was not printed in Amsterdam but by the Frankfurt publisher of De Bry's travels.

This plate is a mirror image of Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague, inv. nr. 496 D 12 part II, p. 183.
