Map of plantations in Berbice

Title Leupe: Kaart van Canaal en Ostsee kust van Berbice.

This map shows various plantations along the river and coast. An elaborate index reveals the owners and extent of the plantations.

In addition, the map shows two new front polders along the river. These polders were strips of land which had been drained and made ready for building, directly south of the government quarters, and were divided into small lots for residences to facilitate the growth of the new town. (See VEL1665.)

This map concerns a more elaborate copy of a map from 1803 compiled by the Berbice land surveyor J.H. Wiedeman. In turn, the map of Wiedeman was based on VEL1584.
