Map of the planned extension of the redoubt Brandwagt
Osterlin, Philippus Marcus
Title Leupe: Plaan der Situatie van het verbeeterde fort Samson of de Brandwagd in Rio de Berbice.
The redoubt Brandwacht was situated on the eastern bank of the Berbice river roughly halfway between Fort Nassau and the mouth of the river Canje, and had probably been a first-alert post since the seventeenth century. Just before 1740 it was fortified to a stronger redoubt, which was given the name of Fort Samson.
This site map showing the fortification at the time of those improvements should be considered in combination with the accompanying detailed ground plan and the views on map VEL1660B-C.
None of the illustrations were signed or dated but on the basis of the handwriting and various other features (see for instance the map on VEL1611) they may be ascribed to the land surveyor Philippus Marcus Osterlin.
North is upper right.
Scale-bar of 50 Rhineland rods = [approximately 1 : 1,230].
