The shipwreck of the Batavia

Anoniem / Anonymous

This print, belonging with the opening passages of Ongeluckige Voyagie in which the ship runs aground, shows the ship running aground on the reef above. To the lower right, we see the attempts to get the ship afloat again by throwing the guns overboard and putting the sloop and boat in the water. On the bottom left, we see the ship still stuck after daybreak. As the ship was slowly torn apart by the waves, the skipper cut down the main mast; we see it lying in the water next to the ship. As there is no immediate hope of refloating the ship, the crew is brought ashore by sloop and boat.
