't Groodt Timoor

Manuscript map of the island of Timor. The map is not only maritime but also depicts the interior of the island in detail – both the western half of the island, which the VOC considered to be its territory, and the Portuguese eastern half, although the latter more sketchily and less accurately. It was likely commissioned by the VOC in the wake of its 1756 treaty with various local rulers on the island. Later notes and addition in two different handwritings bear testimony to the subsequent use of the map. Scale: "Duijtsche Mijlen 15 op een Graat" [approx. 1:450.000]
