Olivier van Noort at the island St. Clara
After departing from São Sebastian the fleet of Olivier van Noort searched for the island St. Helena to restock and recover, but it wasn’t found. After sailing around in the Atlantic the fleet reached St. Clara in early June 1599. Here one of the ships, the Eendracht was burned because it was no longer seaworthy. Later the Hoop would be renamed to Eendracht. Prunes on the island led to the quick recovery of the sick. On the image we see how the crew is on St. Clara. Huts were built and a meal is being cooked. On the islet off the shore men are fishing. At the bottom, the St. Clara burns down.
