The expedition encounters wrecked Portuguese ship

After departing from Borneo, the Mauritius set sail to Bantam, but could not reach it because of western winds. After struggling for some time to reach Bantam, a decision was made to instead head for east Java to resupply and repair the ship. The Mauritius sailed to Iurtan, where it remained for some time in late January until early February 1601. There were no spices to obtain there. The Mauritius then continued through the Strait of Madura and around the island of Java. Along the way a Portuguese ship that had run ashore was sighted. The ship was largely intact and its crew and goods salvaged. Olivier van Noort believed that the ship had been sent to intercept him, but this was not the case.

On the left the galleon from Malacca is visible. It has run aground and its crew leaves the ship in boats. To the right the Mauritius sails away from the galleon.
