Activities of the Nenets (Samoyeds)
Veer, Gerrit de
-Various activities of the Nenets around the Vaigach Strait are jointly depicted here. Among other things, we see how whales are caught and their blubber is boiled for whale oil. On the top left, animals are sacrificed before the religious sculptures at the coast. On the lower left, a sled.
From the Wahrhafftige Relation, the German version of Gerrit de Veer’s journal, published in 1598. (See under ‘documentation’ for details.)
