Afgodenhoek and surrounding area
Veer, Gerrit de
The map and image show part of the south coast of Vaigach. On the lower right, the wooden sculptures at Afgodenhoek (Idols Cape); above it, the bay called ‘Traanbaai’ (Train Oil Bay). On the island itself, the sleds of the local Nenets (called Samoyeds by the Dutch) are depicted. On board the ship, crew members who had stolen furs from these leds, are being keelhauled.
From the Wahrhafftige Relation, the German version of Gerrit de Veer’s journal, published in 1598. (See under ‘documentation’ for details.)
