Map of Kola and surroundings
Veer, Gerrit de
The map shows the river Tumola and the Russian port town of Kola, in Lapland. On the top right we see the island of Kildin; to the left, at the mouth of the river, the Sami settlement and the expedition’s arrival there is depicted. On the river itself, we see the two boats continue to Kola itself once they have discovered the presence of the other expedition ship there. The two figures to the left most likely do not depict the local population, but the reunion of the expedition members of the two ships.
From the Wahrhafftige Relation, the German version of Gerrit de Veer’s journal, published in 1598. (See under ‘documentation’ for details.)
