In the foreground to the left, the ice sheet is breaking into pieces; as the crew brings one boat to safety, the other one ends up in the ice floe, with a sick crew member still on board, and the supplies which were stored on the ice are partly lost. In the background, birds are being hunted, a polar bear is being chased off (4 July) and part of the velvet, which had become wet in the mishap, is being rinsed and dried.
