Dutch plans for the defense of the Demerara estuary date to the 1770s, but were never executed. When the British conquered the colony in February 1781, they did defend the river mouth, apparently drawing on these earlier Dutch plans. When, one year later, the colony was conquered by the French, they revised the English defense of the river mouth.
At approximately this location, the French built a battery called 'La Reine'.
