Map of military expedition in the colony of Berbice

de Veije, François Samuel

Title Leupe: Figurative schets der expedittie tegen de rebelle Guangous negers, den 22 en 23e van Maart 1764, in de Colonie de Berbice gedaan.

This maps is produced in connection with the major slave uprising of 1763 that took place in Berbice and the recapturing of the colony from the rebels in the following year, executed by the expeditionary corps sent out from the Republic and led by Colonel Jan Marius de Salve. In accordance with the instructions issued to De Salve, the early versions of these plans were drawn up in the course of 1764 by one of his seconds-in-command in the expeditionary army, the major and military engineer of the army of the States-General François Samuel de Veije (1726-1797, also: De Veye). For this map see VEL1653.

This section map was probably also drawn by De Veije, considering the extremely close similarities in content and style. Made to a larger scale, it displays the area to the southwest of the confluence of the Berbice and Wiruni Rivers (Wieronie, Wironje in older Dutch sources) where, on the 22nd and 23rd of March 1764 the decisive attack on the combined slave armies and the settlements of the rebels in the forest took place. The rather extensive annotation gives a detailed impression of the preparations made for, and the execution of, this particular operation which was to mark the real end of the rebellion. The ‘Guangous’ given in the title relates to the origins of the slaves involved in the rebellion. There is no consensus on the precise interpretation of this term: they possibly belonged to the Kanga, a population group derived from the Sierra Leone region and Liberia or they might have originally come from the Kwango district in present-day Congo.
