Map of the Dankbaarheyd Plantation
Hagen, J.H.
Title Leupe: Kaarte van de Plantagie de Dankbaarheyd aan Rio de Berbice enz. Van twee nieuwe gronden.
Map of the newly cultivated Dankbaarheyd Plantation belonging to Sir H. Volkmaar residing in Amsterdam and located to the west of the Berbice River.’
Judging from other maps of the area (VEL1599), the compass orientation appears to be wrong.
This map serves to show the extent of the plantation after land has been added to the plantation.
This is a copy of VEL1600 made in 1779 which was elaborated with a small map of nearby plantations along the Berbice River.
Several forests with different kinds of wood lay near the river.
The plantation turns out to measure 500 Surinamese acres (that is 215 hectares), while the added land measures 1000 Surinamese acres (that is 430 hectares).
The original map is signed on 17 October 1775.
Scale-bar of 150 Rhineland rods = 120 ‘strepen’.
