This map shows the border region between Dutch Suriname and British Guyana. Even though the Dutch had already ceded their colonies of Essequibo, Berbice and Demerara in 1814, it still took the British fifteen years to unite these territories into the Guyana colony. Only in 1831 was this colony officially founded. The landscape full of forests and savanes which laid between the colonies of these two competitors was surveyed by Mabé up until 1832. His findings are summarized on this map which is complemented by the handwritten notes of Mr. Leers about his travels up the Coppename River. The original border between Dutch Suriname and Dutch Berbice is still indicated with a dotted line.

North is below.

Scale-bar of 40,000 Dutch ells = 105 ‘strepen’.
