Plan of the fortress Le Dauphin
Kanne, Carl Christiaan
Title Leupe: Plan van het fort Le Dauphin, op de Oostzeepunct van Demerary gelegen.
This map is part of a series on two forts designed for the river mouth of the Demerara.
This ground plan demonstrates how the eastern fort, Le Dauphin, was built in 1782-1783.
Just like its British predecessor, slightly to the south, it was a small earthen fortification but it was equipped with heavier batteries of eighteen guns in total, mounted on two levels.
Depicted above is the situation as it was in January 1784, shortly before the French retreat.
In the final French construction, a number of relatively minor adaptations were introduced, as illustrated here.
Scale-bar of 300 Rhineland feet = 160 ‘strepen’ [approximately 1 : 595].
