This is a reprint of a work from 1792 (VEL99). After Gerard Hulst van Keulen was chosen as one of the three comissioners for maritime cartography in 1787, he obtained the task ‘to determine distances on sea and improve sea charts’. After publishing his atlas De nieuwe groote lichtende zee-fakkel in 1790, he could focus his attention on this task. This maps depicts the distance between the Old and New world. He calculates this through rhumb lines, while carefully drawing shortlines and archipelagos like the Azores or Cape Verde.
