Coastline profiles of Mauritius

In late September 1598, part of the Second Expedition (Tweede Schipvaart) to the East Indies, came across an island known as Diego Rodriguez, which they renamed Mauritius of Nassau after the Dutch stadholder and flagship of the expedition. The ships remained there for some time and crew went ashore to refresh supplies and explore the island. In early October the ships departed again. The coastline profile is drawn by Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck of the Vriesland and shows the island as seen from about 10-11 miles distance. The second profile shows a small island observed at about 10-11 miles distance. The coastline profile on the right page shows the highest peak of the island when it is west of the observer at about 3 miles.
