Juwana

Joana, a VOC post on the northeastern coast of Java, fell under the VOC headquarters at Semarang. The outpost was set up in order to combat the secret trade in rice and sugar. The post further functioned as a place of refuge for vessels during the west monsoon. In charge of this residence was a vice merchant who was charged with ensuring that Joana supplied the Company with rice, wood, and to a lesser extent indigo and cotton yarns. The VOC station was situated on the banks of the Joana River, one of the biggest and busiest in Java. The Company redoubt boasted four half bastions which housed rice warehouses, barracks for the troops and the kitchens for the residence. In later years the resident built his living quarters outside the redoubt.
