View of the Castle of Batavia seen from 'Kali Besar'
Beeckman, Andries
Painting of a view of the castle at Batavia.
The landscape as depicted is not altogether correct from a topographical point of view. The river Kali Besar is too narrow and several buildings have been left out in order to offer an unimpeded view of the castle.
In the foreground a market scene with people from diverse nationalities: Malays, natives of the East Indies, Portuguese, Chinese and Dutch.
Near the palm trees, a few young man are playing a game similar to football called 'kaki bollah'.
In the tree branches one can see people as well as animals.
