Draft of Saint Eustatius Island

Anoniem / Anonymous

Title Leupe: Platte grond van het Eyland St. Eustatius.

On this anonymous sketch map of Sint Eustatius with a view of the roadstead, besides Fort Oranje (in its later triangular form) and the battery at Tumble-Down Dick Bay, a fort called Nassau and a battery on the southern point of the island are indicated. The battery was a fortification begun in 1748 under Commander Heijliger. However, the designation ‘Fort Nassau’ must be based on a mistake, because this was only actually built in 1753 on the coast not to the northwest but to the southeast of Fort Oranje. The building in question is probably the so-called New Fort, shown as it was after it had been rebuilt in 1749. This fortification, actually no more than a large battery, was later known as Fort Hollandia.

North is upper left.
