Map of Willemstad and environs
Originally this rare hydrographical map with three profiles of the entrance to Sint Anna Bay, based on measurements and soundings taken on 26 August 1748, was probably the work of the military engineers Carel Gustaaf Schrijver and Godfried Carel Esdé. Two other version have been preserved in the Netherlands National Archives, under inventory numbers VEL599 and 4.OBPV 1.131, neither of which offer any solution to the identity of the maker.
This map is probably a copy made several decades later, given the style of the lettering and other elements in the representation. Its most likely maker is the military engineer Johan Christoph Heneman, who in the 1770s worked principally in Surinam, Essequibo and Demerara. See for comparison the similar map of Caracas Bay on VEL643.
