This print from Ongeluckige Voyagie depicts how a large proportion of those on board the sloop and boat were taken to safety on two islets, today's Beacon Island and Traitor's Island (above). Below, the search for fresh water that chief merchant Francisco Pelsaert, skipper Adriaan Jacobsz, and some 40 other crew members said they were going to make with the boat. In reality, this search did not amount to much; after a brief reconnaissance of one of the nearby larger islands, the boat sailed north towards Batavia on 9 June 1629, leaving the other crew members to their fate.
