The god worshipped at Batticalao
This image shows the god worshipped by the people of Batticaloa. As it has the head of an elephant and is worshipped, according to the accompanying text, for “wisdom, riches and health”, this is likely a depiction of Ganesha. Around the god, people sit kneeling with their hands held up. Some hold jewellery in their hands. The text in Latin is probably a reference to the Old Testament Book of Job, chapter 35, verse 12.
