Map of South America
This map shows part of South America and the route that Oliver van Noort’s expedition sailed near Brazil and along the Peruvian coast. In the east, we see how the Dutch ships arrived in Brazil, where they were chased away from Rio de Janeiro. The route shows how the Dutch visited the islands St. Clara and St. Sebastian and tried unsuccessfully to find St. Helena. On the left, the Dutch ships sail from Chile to above Quito. The map shows a large number of towns, bays, rivers and ports on the South American coast. The river Parana is depicted rather largely in the middle of the map.
The description in the journal that accompanies the map says: “Map and new drawing of the coasts of Peru, from 29 degrees, to the south of the equator line. The full description of these, one can find on pages 39, 40, 41, 42 and 43 described as it is now. Here Lima is located, the capital of the whole of Peru, in the harbor of which named Callau de Lima, here all ships gather the riches coming from Potosí and other places of Peru, which are sent from these to Panama under strong guard.”
