Map of Tierra del Fuego
Walbeeck, Johannes van
The map shows part of Tierra del Fuego and Staten Island (still named Isla de Los Estados), with the Le Maire Strait in between them. At Tierra del Fuego’s southeast coast, where the ships of the Nassau Fleet were trapped due to the weather for some weeks in early 1624, we see the Dutch names the expedition members gave to various landmarks, including Schapenham’s Bay, the Nassau Basin and L’Hermite’s Island.
