Coastline profile of Lifumatola
Laerle, Joris Joostensz.
After winning a naval engagement against the Portuguese at Bantam in early January, the Moluccan fleet of the Fifth Expedition continued to their actual destination: the Moluccan islands of Banda and Ternate. On the way to the Moluccas the ships passed the island Sulawesi and then sailed past the island Lifumatola of the Sula-islands.
This drawing was possibly made by Joris Joostensz. Laerle on 5 February 1602 in the journal of the Gelderland. The text under the first panel says this is the island Lifumatola. The second and third panels show Lifumatola of the Sula-islands from north-northwest to north by east.
