Map of the new vacant lots near the Matapica creek

Heneman, Johan Christoph van

Title Leupe: Kaart van de Plantagien, gelegen in de Warappa Creeq en Canaal.

This map shows several lots at the two new canals (blue lines on top and at the bottom of the map) dug through the Warapa Creek (not visible).

Emphasis is put on the planned lots of 500 Surinamese acres each (=265 hectares), which are numbered with 32 and 34-37.

Two of these new lots (number 37 and 34) are reserved by the Echtensrots plantation.

The other lots are designated and contain their extent and surface as well as a dotted line indicating their hinterland.

The first land assignments in this area were made shortly before the middle of the eighteenth century.

The reclamation of the low-lying parts farther from the river began before c. 1757, starting along Warapa and Marapica Creeks, for which purpose however a system of drainage and supply channels had to be constructed.

Scale of 100 Chains of 66 Rhineland feet = 170 ‘strepen’.
