Map of lots in the Matapica and surrounding creeks
Reynet, J.
Title Leupe: Caart van de Matapica Creeq, ten deele gemeeten met de daarin vergeevene gronden, ten deele by gissinge opgenomen door: Reynet.
This map shows all lots around the Matapica, Warapa, Caabbus, Tapuripa Creeks to the north of the Commewijne and Cottica river.
This is a copy of VEL1863 which adds information via a legend which mentions the name of the owner, the amount of Surinamese acres (0,43 hectares per akker) in possession and the governor-general who granted right to the land..
Compated to VEL1864, fewer lots are depicted.
The first land assignments in this area were made shortly before the middle of the eighteenth century.
The reclamation of the low-lying parts farther from the river began before c. 1757, starting along Warapa and Marapica Creeks, for which purpose however a system of drainage and supply channels had to be constructed.
This map gives a total view of all these lots and shows most land has been cultivated and granted to planters.
The Sommelsdijk fortress is drawn for orientation.
Scale of 70 Chains of 66 Rhineland feet = 65 ‘strepen’
