Map of the region east of the Suriname River
Wollant, Johann Friedrich Ferdinand
Title Leupe: Generaal Plan der begeven en gecultiveerden landen aan de Oostkant der Colonie van Surinaame enz., alsmede der nog onbegeeven landen tussen de Surinaeme, Comowyne, Pirica, Cottica enz. Verschillende mijlschalen.
Wollant’s map shows nearly the entire region east of the Suriname River known to the Dutch in 1781. This map already displays all the characteristics of professional military topographic maps which came into general use only halfway through the nineteenth century, including the indication of the relief, the natural vegetation and the rest of the composition of the terrain, land use and water management. Also indicated is the complete line of the Defence Cordon between the military post Gelderland on the Surinam River and the Uitkijk (Lookout) on the east coast, of which Wollant himself designed large sections.
North is below.
Scale-bars of 800 chains of 66 Rhineland feet / 5 Holland miles of 20 in a degree / 4 hours walking = [approximately 1 : 90,000].
