Plan of Fort Willem Frederik and the town of Stabroek on the east bank of the Demerara River
Hoffman, Jan
This map displays a project for the reinforcement of Fort Willem Frederik, which necessitated amendments to the ground plan. It is a polished-up elaboration of Hoffman’s sketch plan catalogued under: Nationaal Archief, 2.01.28.02, 168C, kaart.. Most of what is shown on the map amounts to mere prolans, both in the case of the defence works and the town; in reality the built-up areas were not nearly as extensive as Hoffman’s map would lead one to believe. In much the same way, the typically Dutch layout with canals projected for the new district between the existing town of Stabroek and the fort was never actually realized in this particular form. The plantations equally might have been exaggerated.
