This schematic map was drawn in Suriname in or shortly before 1778 by Captain of the Infantry Ary Westmaas and was dispatched to the Republic the same year. In 1778, Westmaas was appointed inspector of the Military Cordon (Cordon of Defence). The drawing shows four possible march and bivouac deployments for the army on forays into the jungle. An abridged reproduction of the legend: 1 and 3. slaves who clear the way; 2. 25 men of the Vrije Korps (Free Corps); 4. 20 regular troops; 5. porters with the provisions; 6. 80 regular troops; 7. staff officers with the ammunition; 8. field hospital; 9. reserve corps; 10. porters with baggage; 11. 60 regular troops; 12. 20 regular troops; 13. 25 men from the Vrije Korps; 14. small detachments to cover the flanks; 15. small redoubts with pickets.
