Design for the rebuilding of the commander's residence
Hurter, Johan Conrad
Title Leupe: "Plan van een nieuw kommandementshuis in Suriname."
This design by Johan Conrad Hurter relates to a plot due west of the Governor’s residence, letter (D) on the 1775 ground plan on VELH614. On this land, an older brick dwelling housed the so-called Commandement or Commandery between 1743 and 1777; the official residence of the commander-in-chief of the garrison in the service of the Surinam Society. The Commandery was extended in 1775, but two years later it burnt down completely and Hurter was commissioned to design a new residence with outbuildings for the commander. The surviving plans and drawings are shown here. However, eventually the project was called off and the commandery was housed further east.
