Legend for a map of the Cape of St. Augustin

Title Leupe: Kaart van het Puntaal binnen Kaap St. Augustyn, met aparte legenda.

Based on the siege maps made in 1634 (Nationaal Archief, AANW128 and VEL713-714, and Stadsarchief Deventer, WIC ID 703-48), the condition of de Cabo was surveyed once more in 1636 after the Portuguese were driven out of their fort Nossa Senhora de Nazaré (‘Nazareth’). This list indicates the buildings and fortifictions which were described during this survey. The attached map (VEL715) can be assigned to the engineer Tobias Commersteijn judged from the handwriting in the title. It is unclear whether these notes were also written by him.
