Plan of Philipsburg
Freres, Avril / Lemercier
Title Leupe: Plan projete du Salin de Philisbourg a St. Martin (Antilles).
This French ground plan of Philisburg is made through chromolithografy, which likely dates the map to sometime after 1837, the year that the patent for this printing technique was published in France. The map probably shows the town as it was in the early nineteenth century, giving an elaborate index of walls, canals and roads as well as depth measurements of the nearby lake. A new town wall is depicted and coloured in three shades to show which parts gain priority. Nearby fields are noted and te extent of Fort Willem and adjacent buildings are drawn in a simple manner.
