After Gerard Hulst van Keulen was appointed as one of the three commissioners for maritime cartography in 1787, he obtained the task ‘to determine distances on sea and improve sea charts’. After releasing his atlas ‘De nieuwe groote lichtende zee-fakkel’ in 1790, he could focus his attention on this task. This maps depicts the distance between the Old and New world. He calculates this through rhumb lines, while carefully drawing shortlines and archipelagos like the Azores or Cape Verde.
