According to the author Pieter van Dam, the VOC maintained a so-called 'comptoir' in Martavaan some 40 years before he embarked on his history of the Company, 'Beschryvinge van de Oostindische Compagnie'. This would date the settlement around 1660. However this trading post on the West Coast of Birma was soon abandoned due to a ban imposed by the local ruler.
